The Good Old Days of Remote File Backup Weren’t Really That Good

Posted by Kevin Hoisington on Tue, May 08, 2012 @ 10:40 AM

Over the years, maintaining backup operations at remote sites has been both costly and risky. The costs related to specialized staff, hardware, software, media and procedures at each location are easy to recognize, but the risk? I won’t dwell, but remember how stressful life was when that batch of branch backup tapes with unencrypted corporate and customer data was lost?

Centralizing backup with a replication solution has always seemed like a great idea, but how do you implement real-time backup across numerous branch offices without requiring an expensive wide area network (WAN) upgrade?

The answer is to find a solution built on a foundation of proven, world-class synchronization and replication technology that offers features like continuous data protection, WAN performance optimization, multi-threading, centralized administration, lots of connectivity options and VSS compatibility.

A great example of this is PeerBackup Server Edition, a best-of-breed solution designed from the ground up to securely synchronize and replicate gigabytes and even terabytes of branch office data across a WAN in real-time with a central server.

Check out PeerBackup Server Edition by clicking on the button below, and better yet, join the real-time revolution and say goodbye to the extra effort, cost and risks associated with backing up data at each remote location.

How to Make a WAN Feel Like a LAN

Posted by Kevin Hoisington on Wed, Apr 11, 2012 @ 02:42 AM

Every now and then a technology comes along that enables even small IT teams to handle the daily tasks associated with processing the huge volumes of data that flow through their organization. We have all had our favorite utilities, languages, middleware and databases, but today’s world of “big data” places new challenges on IT organizations of all sizes. Meeting these additional challenges is not a problem at global investment advisor Santa Fe Partners where their modest but savvy IT group utilizes backup, synchronization and migration solutions powered by PeerSync to help them comfortably manage their market and transactional data.

Capabilities like byte level replication, multithreading to optimize performance, bandwidth throttling, and flexible timeout settings combined with friendly, knowledgeable support enable the IT team at Santa Fe partners to securely synchronize and transfer large amounts of data from their U.S. and overseas offices to remote backup storage and disaster recovery servers without saturating their data lines.

The end results were remarkable, but I don’t want to give away the entire story. Check out what Santa Fe Partners has to say about their experiences working with PeerSync, and how they continue to find new ways to utilize this powerful technology.

Bridging the Geography Gap with File Collaboration

Posted by Kevin Hoisington on Mon, Apr 02, 2012 @ 09:49 AM

If you are a global automotive supplier with 3,500 employees in nine locations throughout Europe, Asia and North America how do you enable project teams to collaborate using engineering and production files that need to be shared and updated in different locations? How do you make this happen while utilizing an unpredictable Wide Area Network (WAN) connection between locations? How do you make sure that file integrity is maintained?

This is the challenge that Kiekert AG faced not too long ago; a classic use case example of business file collaboration that could not be solved by the likes of WAN accelerators, centralized file storage and complex content management systems. By deploying PeerLink, Peer Software’s distributed enterprise file sharing and collaboration solution, Kiekert was able to minimize the impact of limited and unpredictable bandwidth across their WAN while dramatically improving overall performance. In fact, users no longer have to wait for files to download across the WAN because fully synchronized, up-to-date copies are readily available on their local server.

As globalization drives more organizations to collaborate with customers and partners around the world, the ability to provide file collaboration infrastructure is rapidly becoming an imperative for IT teams, but don’t just take our word for it. Check out what global leaders like Kiekert have to say.

Business File Collaboration – The WAN is not Your Friend

Posted by Kevin Hoisington on Thu, Mar 29, 2012 @ 09:58 AM

With the global economy warming up and IT budgets starting to improve, it is a great time to take stock of how your organization is conducting business. If you have geographically dispersed employees, partners and customers who need to collaborate with shared project files then check out this short video on Business File Collaboration.

Let’s face it; there are a lot of “collaboration” solutions out there. But, if you have teams that are located in multiple branch offices, require interactive high performance access to the latest file versions and depend on unpredictable Wide Area Network (WAN) and Internet connections, it is likely that you have already tried less optimal file sharing methods such as email, FTP, complex content management systems and WAN accelerators.

The WAN is not your friend, and neither are collaboration solutions that lack the following capabilities:

  • Enterprise-class performance and scalability for large branch office deployments
  • Enhanced management of file version conflicts across high-latency and unstable WAN environments
  • Centralized administration and monitoring
  • Best-of-breed file synchronization and locking across Windows and NetApp storage environments

Learning how to enable high performance file sharing and collaboration for your remote project teams is less than 10 minutes away.

Microsoft DFSR: Leveraging the Benefits and Filling the Gaps

Posted by Daniela Delgado on Sun, Apr 05, 2009 @ 12:52 AM

Microsoft's Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) has revolutionized the way in which users are able to access files on local servers that are also available to users on other, geographically distant servers connected by a wide area network (WAN). Supporting the ability to access these shared files locally has improved performance and reduced WAN overhead, but Microsoft has failed to adequately address one crucial fact of file life.

Files, especially those shared by project teams, are constantly being changed--they are moved from one folder to the next, their contents are rewritten, deleted, and added to.  For multiple users attempting to work with the same files replicated on multiple servers, it becomes nearly impossible to keep track of changes and prevent those files from being corrupted and overwritten without some form of system automation.

If this scenario sounds familiar related to your implementation of DFSR, then please take few minutes to learn more about PeerLock from Peer Software which integrates with Microsoft DFSR to enable network file locking while shared local files are in use.

This innovative program provides real-time detection of file use, immediate file locking and synchronization along with easy installation and unobtrusive operation.

Less file corruption and fewer version conflicts lead to happier users.

Peer Software introduces FolderMaestro - New Business File Sharing Software

Posted by Paul Marsala on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 @ 12:05 PM

Dear Peer Software Customer,

First, for your support of our products over the past 15 years, I want to personally say thank you. Since our inception, we have continually updated and improved our Peer Software products based on direct interaction and feedback from you, our customers. It is through this process that we have built a very loyal following, mostly through word of mouth, and as a result our business has grown considerably, especially in the past several years. I have had many conversations with our clients and have tried to lead our innovation in a direction that met the changing needs of your business. More and more I was asked for central monitoring and management of synchronization sessions, better distribution methods of pushing files to multiple targets, shorter folder scan times, etc. Over the years, you have seen major improvements in PeerSync based on this feedback with the introduction of capabilities such as multi-threaded operations, better dynamic profile loading and configuration, central loading of dynamic profiles, and much more. And several years ago we added file locking to our product set with PeerLock, expanded the capabilities of our PeerSync Observer (PSObserver) tool for central monitoring; and created a new product line for managed files called Peer DRS for Microsoft SQL and Exchange backup.

In addition to the work done on the Peer family of products, we also began a parallel internal development effort several years ago in search of a much more scalable and flexible file management environment that allowed for increasing requirements for central management and monitoring of distributed file operations. This technology utilized the latest in modern programming tools and techniques and has led us today to a new product line which we call FolderMaestro. Since our intentions for this product line are initially for enterprise level file collaboration we decided to launch a new company, called FolderMaestro, to market, sell and develop this software so as not to have it confused with our PeerSync File Collaboration product (which is a combination of our PeerSync and PeerLock Software). The FolderMaestro software is a much more scalable solution for enterprises with many file servers that need to participate in a collaborative session. File locking and distribution is all highly coordinated through a central hub that also is the place where all configuration is accomplished. All participating file servers can be connected via intranet or internet using SSL and encryption. FolderMaestro has some advantages over our PeerSync File Collaboration package and if you need to collaborate on four or more servers or need to use TCP connections, we recommend switching to the FolderMaestro software. For more information, please feel free to visit FolderMaestro at www.foldermaestro.com or email sales@foldermaestro.com.

It is important to let you know that we plan to continue to innovate and update our PeerSync family of products under the Peer Software name. In fact, this month’s newsletter announces a new update to PeerSync and we already have a full plate of “wish list” items we are already working on for next year. Our Peer Software Development staff is a dedicated team of professionals who have been with me for a long time. Please rest assured that the Peer products you have come to rely on for your business will continue to be improved, be sold, and be supported for many years to come. But for those of you who require a little something extra in terms of large scale multi-server file synchronization and file locking software, we invite you to also evaluate FolderMaestro. FolderMaestro is supported by a separate development team from the Peer Software engineers, but the two teams are synergistic in sharing the vast wealth of information and experience gained from working with you over these last 15 years. Our helpful Peer Software Technical Support staff will be assisting with FolderMaestro support for a while so you will undoubtedly encounter one of them if you decide to try/switch to the FolderMaestro File Collaboration software.

We are looking forward to working with you to help solve the business problems of today and tomorrow and to explore opportunities to help you in many new and exciting ways through Peer Software and now FolderMaestro.

From all of us here at the Peer family, we wish you and your family the best during this holiday season.

Warmest regards,

Paul Marsala
